Bulk Bunk Assignment lets you place many campers in one move, from a table or from a board of bunk columns. It saves the same assignments as Assign Bunks and follows the same filter and assignment rules.
You’ll need Cabin/Bunk Management permission at the Authorized level and your bunk plans set up in Bunk Configuration. It always works on your current season.
In this article:
Open a plan and filter your campers
Assign campers with the button or drag and drop
Remove campers and handle warnings
Open the Workspace
Go to Admin > Bunks > Bulk Bunk Assignment.
Choose a plan from the Bunk plan picker.
📋 Note: If your camp has no bunk plans for the current season, the page points you to Bunk Configuration instead.
Filter Campers
Under Filter campers, use Search to find a camper by name. Use Division and Tag to pre-filter the list.
Under Filter campers and bunks, use Session, Gender, and the Grade range. These also narrow the bunk columns on the Board and the Target bunk list.
📋 Note: The Grade range always applies. A bunk with no grade or age range set is hidden. Set a range in Bunk Configuration to bring it back.
📋 Note: The Program filter appears only when the plan you’re editing has programs. If you don’t see it, your plan doesn’t use them.
Click a filter button to open its checklist. In Division, use Select all or Clear all to change every choice at once.
Check Showing X of Y campers to see how many campers your filters leave. Click Clear filters to start over.
📋 Note: Every session starts selected. If you deselect them all, no campers show. Filters reset when you reload the page.
🎯Try it now: Go to Admin > Bunks > Bulk Bunk Assignment, choose a plan, and filter to one division. Check that the Showing X of Y count matches what you expect. Come back when you’ve done it.
Grid and Board Views
Click Grid or Board next to View.
Grid: One row per camper with a tick box, name, gender, grade, and current bunk. Campers without a bunk show “Unassigned.” The box in the header selects every visible row.
Board: An Unassigned column, then one column per bunk. Each bunk header shows how full it is, such as “4 of 5 filled,” and has a Select all box. Each camper is a card with their name, gender, and grade. An empty column reads “No campers.”
📋 Note: Ticking a camper in one view ticks them in the other.
Assign Campers
Tick the campers you want to place. On the Board, use a column’s Select all box.
Choose a bunk in the Target bunk picker.
📋 Note: Dragging a ticked card carries every ticked camper. Dragging an unticked card carries only that camper. A drop runs the same checks as the Assign button.
Click Assign.
To use drag and drop on the Board:
📋 Note: Drag and drop needs a mouse. On a touch screen, use the tick boxes and the Assign button.
Switch to Board.
Drag a card onto a bunk column.
📋 Note: Changes save the moment you assign. There is no Save button and no undo. Assigning a camper who already has a bunk in this plan moves them. To reverse a change, reassign or remove.
🎯Try it now: Switch to the Board, tick one camper who still needs a bunk, and assign them to a bunk. Choose a camper you actually want placed, since the change saves right away. Come back when you’ve done it.
Remove Campers
Tick the campers you want to take out of their bunk.
Click Remove from bunk.
The campers move to the Unassigned column.
Warnings and Refusals
Some rules block a camper outright.
You can’t override these:
The camper isn’t enrolled in a session the bunk covers
The camper’s program doesn’t match the bunk’s programs
The bunk is single-gender and the camper isn’t
The camper is outside the bunk’s grade or age range
The bunk has no grade or age range set
Two situations only warn you. Choose Assign anyway or Cancel:
The camper is in a different division than the bunk
The bunk would go over capacity
If some campers in a batch are blocked, the rest are still assigned and the blocked ones are listed with the reason. Cancel on a warning saves nothing. Staff Only bunks never appear as targets.
📋 Note: A bunk with no capacity set never triggers an over-capacity warning. Its Board header reads “assigned, no capacity set” instead of a fill count. Set a capacity in Bunk Configuration if you want the warning.
If the Page Is Read-Only
Only one person can edit a bunk plan at a time. Bulk Bunk Assignment and Assign Bunks share the same lock.
Read the message at the top of the page. It names who is editing, or tells you that your own Assign Bunks window is open.
Ask that person to close their page, or close your own Assign Bunks window.
Wait up to about a minute. Editing turns back on without a reload.
📋 Note: After 15 minutes without activity, the page pauses editing and clears your selection. Click Resume editing to continue.
💡 Tip: Keep one page open per plan. Two tabs on the same plan can both edit, and one can overwrite the other.
When to Use Assign Bunks
Use Assign Bunks for anything this page doesn’t cover.
This can include:
Staff, staff-only bunks, and staff housing
Holding bunks
Gender Identity, Previous Bunk, and Area filters
Seasons other than the current one
Campers who are also hired staff for the season
🏕️Camps in Action
A program director was placing eight returning campers in Aspen. She filtered to July and one division, ticked the eight campers on the Board, and dragged them to the Aspen column. The over-capacity warning showed Aspen had room for six. She chose Cancel, set two campers aside for another bunk, and dropped the rest. Nothing was saved until the numbers worked.
Before you move on, check yourself:
Can you open a plan and filter to the campers you want to place?
Do you know which warnings you can override and which you can’t?
Do you know when to switch to Assign Bunks instead?
